Which mask is
running you?

Most people are being run by a mask they never actually chose. You picked it up for a good reason and it worked, which is exactly why it never came off. The danger passed. The mask stayed. And after enough years you stop calling it a mask at all. You call it this is just who I am.

It isn't. That's the whole point. You're not a fixed thing. But you can't put down a mask you can't see.

So, nine questions. Answer honestly, not aspirationally. Nobody's watching.

Question 1

When you imagine really going for the thing you want, what's the loudest voice in your head?

Question 2

The strengths people praise you for, where do you think they actually came from?

Question 3

When you achieve something you worked hard for, how long does the good feeling last?

Question 4

Where does most of your effort quietly go?

Question 5

If nobody would ever know, no audience, no praise, no judgment, what would you do differently?

Question 6

Which of these would sting most, coming from someone who knows you well?

Question 7

Something good starts happening in your life. What's your first instinct?

Question 8

When you picture the life you want, whose approval is quietly in the picture?

Question 9

What's the real thing standing between you and the life you'd want?

Your result

What happens next

Your full write-up, then five letters.

You've got the name. On its own the name changes nothing, and knowing which mask you wear has never once made anybody take it off.

So the first email is your result in full: where this mask came from, why it was intelligent, and what it's quietly costing you. Then one letter a day for five days, one idea each.

  1. Your result in full, and why the mask was intelligent
  2. The death nobody warns you about, and it isn't the one at the end
  3. Why you're not a fixed thing, and how I know
  4. The one part of you that you don't get to trade away
  5. Mask as a bridge, or mask as a prison
  6. Why becoming is the most fun thing you'll ever do

You'll get one email asking you to confirm. Click it or nothing starts. No spam, no selling your address, leave whenever you want.

The Performer MOSTLY A

The social mask is running you. You're extremely good at being who you're supposed to be, and somewhere in there you lost the thread of what you'd want if the audience got up and left.

The Armored MOSTLY B

The trauma mask is running you. You got hurt, you got smart about it, you built walls that worked. The walls never came down, and at some point you started calling them your personality.

The Sleepwalker MOSTLY C

No mask, which sounds like good news and mostly isn't, because what's running you is quieter and more dangerous. You know what you want. You're watching yourself not go get it.
